Burgundy and Chartreuse

Pam from Digging made a comment, on last week’s front yard project post, about my burgundy and chartreuse color scheme. I have to admit it is a favorite; I am drawn to those colors in my home and clothing, not just in my garden, (although it's brown not burgundy for the clothes).

I took a look around the garden to see how many instances of the combo I could find…turns out quite a few, and sometimes even on the same plant! And, yes, I took a few liberties with the definition of burgundy. I'm not naming any names here, just let me know if you are curious about any specific plant...

  2. Burgundy & chartreuse are my faves for plant combinations too. I'm loving your blog. My husband works at AMAA & he sent me your link.

What are the plants in the 12th picture? I think I spy possibly flax, but what is the rounded leaf plant? Also, I spied some Hens n' Chicks that were very pretty!

  4. Hey Deb - thanks! Driving to work this morning I realized with the trees all blooming and leafing out virtually all of Portland is sporting that color combo at the moment...love it!

I suspect I know who your husband is, and that is one cute baby you guys have! Congrats!

  5. Denise - you are correct about the Flax...the chartreuse behind it is actually the blossom of Euphorbia characias ssp. wulfenii. They are about 4 ft tall right now! And yep...love those Hens n' Chicks!

  6. I just love the black leaves against gold and chartreuse leaves. I wish I could successfully grow black mondo grass or hakonechloa. Maybe if I had better drainage. I'll just have to admire yours.

  8. Megan - really? It's my experience that both of these are totally ok with bad drainage. I have horrid drainage in some parts of my yard and excellent drainage in others, they couldn't seem to care less about where they are. Same for sun vs. sun/shade and totally shade. These guys are my "cast-iron" plants. I am sorry to hear that!

    Pam - uhm...let's see...

  9. Lovely color selections! At this time of the year, all the new growth is freshly colored and contrasting, but I can see your combinations will stand the test of summer heat and maturity. What is the spotted, lily-like plant coming up through the pebbles, seventh from the bottom?

  10. Thanks Jane...that is a Agave Manfreda 'Spot' it is deciduous at 25 / hardy to -20. A very fun plant that I got at Cistus. The one pictured is just emerging from it's winters sleep. It will look more like a soft leaved agave in a month or so.

  11. Believe it or not, I was trying to figure out if a chatreuse accent would work well with my burgundy couch and accent wall. You provided plenty of examples to prove to me they do! Thanks!
